Things to Consider when Purchasing New Ballet Shoes

Whether you’re buying for your child, or for yourself, it can be quite difficult knowing what to buy when starting something for the first time. For those starting out at ballet, it’s best to ask your teacher what type of shoe they recommend. Some teachers and classes may vary with what they prefer.

It’s essential these shoes fit you properly. All shoes should fit well to ensure they don’t damage or warp your feet and back. Ballet shoes should be snug to the foot, but not squeezing the toes. You should still be able to put your toes flat on the floor. Generally your normal shoe size will be the same as for the pumps, and with children it can be best or get half a size larger to allow for growing room – you don’t want to be buying a new pair every month!

The type of material can be down to personal preference, but it’s worth considering that satin looks great, but isn’t very durable, and usually is preferred for performances only. Canvas is great for most dancers, as it is durable and can be washed easily. Leather is usually for the more regular dancer as it is the most durable material for shoes. All the materials will stretch over time.

If you are starting out, you will most likely need a full sole ballet shoe to allow your foot to strengthen. Gradually you will develop into a split sole pump which lets your foot point further and gives more movement and flexibility.

There’s a huge range of ballet pumps out there… here’s some of the most popular for beginners. It’s always worth talking to other dancers and teachers to see what they recommend.
